Ghost in the Shell
“My mind is human. My body is manufactured. I am the first of my kind, but I won’t be the last. We cling to memories as if they define us, but what we do defines us. My ghost survived to remind the next of us that humanity is our virtue. I know who I am, and what I’m here to do.”
I intend to design a live performance based on the Japanese manga of the same name by Masamune Shirow.
For the title, “ghost” means soul. It’s the existence of soul which is self-awareness that distinct human from artificial intelligence. “Shell” means the container of the soul, which can be human body and prosthesis that replaced human body. The purpose of the performance is to make the manga come to life in a different approach and to transfer the idea of relations and boundaries between human and artificial intelligence and to promote it with a heavy focus on the visual impacts.
The setting will be in a cybortic, futuristic and optical polluted world. Inspired by the cyber punk world of some science fiction films such as Blade Runner.
As the manga talks about the relations between people, AI and cyborg in depth, the performer who as Kusanagi will show the desire for a real soul and the confusion of herself between people and artificial intelligence though the performance with the interaction with costume. And the performance intends to show the contrast between the fragile, depressive, decadent reality and the splendid, passionate, open cyber space.
